Background
The Kona Village Resort is an extremely unique destination comprised of Polynesian themed bungalows. The structural work for this project consisted of assisting the architect in the modernization and renovation of 29 bungalow units, including the reconfiguration of interior spaces and addition of new amenities such as private Jacuzzis. The project also included repair and strengthening of the floor systems where required.
Innovative Approach
Many of the existing bungalows were several decades old and uniquely framed with a combination of indigenous woods and conventional framing. This project required knowledge of the material properties of local woods and an ability to work outside of standard textbook framing in order to successfully update the units.
Client Benefits
The charm of Kona Village Resort comes from its quaint island village theme gracefully embraced in a palm lined oceanside setting. Unfortunately current coastal management policies would not allow a resort similar to this to be replicated. Because of creative renovation work, the client is able to provide updated accommodations without losing the special feel of this timeless resort.
