With a primarily functional use, it may be assumed that the approach to structural system selection for parking structures is
relatively simple. In addressing cost-effective options for parking structures however, there are many variables to consider. Of the primary structural systems, cast-in-place concrete, precast concrete and steel each have benefits that have to be given consideration. In addition, site constraints along with constantly changing material costs can factor into the final overall cost. At BASE, even a seemingly unglamorous parking structure can prove to be an interesting design challenge that utilizes our creativity to provide the client with value in the final product.

The challenge of school projects is in combining functionality with durability while still creating an aesthetic setting that encourages curiosity and learning. Of particular significance to the structural design is the special code requirement that schools be designed to an enhanced "essential facility" level. This is in recognition of the importance to safeguard our children by providing a higher level of safety in the event of a hurricane or earthquake. It takes a combination of collaboration and focus to achieve all of these important requirements within typically tight project budgets.

ANTITERRORISM/FORCE PROTECTION (AT/FP) »» view
BASE has emerged as the leading structural engineering consulting firm addressing antiterrorism/force protection (AT/FP) and blast mitigation in Hawaii. BASE has extensive experience incorporating the Department of Defense Antiterrorism/Force Protection Standards on new construction, major renovations and historic facilities. In addition, our office has made a commitment to stay current with state-of-the-art AT/FP and blast mitigation technology. This is evident by the investment BASE makes on continuing education, formal training and computational tools.

In addition to designing for progressive collapse mitigation, BASE is involved with assessing blast loadings on critical facilities that require an enhanced level of security or do not meet minimum stand off distances. As with many existing military facilities, special consideration must also be given to providing mitigation solutions that do not impact the historic nature of a building.

In order to provide our clients with the most state-of-the-art and cost-effective structural engineering solutions, BASE believes in investing in its people. Our staff has formal training in blast design and the DoD AT/FP Standards.
